SUMMARY

The School Operations Team is focused on creating the conditions by which our schools can thrive by designing and leading efficient, safe, joyful, and just systems; working to remove obstacles to learning and find creative solutions to challenges to enable the highest level of teaching and learning; and providing best-in-class customer service to families and staff members to ensure they feel welcomed, cared for and a valued member of our community.

The School Custodian is a school-based position that performs tasks that keep the building in good shape and ensure everything runs smoothly, from dusting to ensuring paper supplies are stocked. Sankofa is looking for a responsible custodian to maintain and protect our facilities. The external and internal appearance of a building reflects the love we have for our community. It is important for our custodian to be careful and thorough in working, cleaning and tidying the premises.

HOURS

10:30AM-6:30PM; M-F and some work over school breaks.

COMPENSATION

Full time salaried role

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Performs general, routine custodial duties, to include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, waxing floors, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper and soap supplies.
• Puts together furniture, completes typical "handyman" duties
• Lanscaping duties
• Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies.
• Empties trash receptacles, disposes trash into compactors and/or dumpsters, and bags trash for proper disposal.
• Unlocks doors, ensuring doors are locked after cleaning areas.
• Reports needs and concerns to appropriate staff, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels.
• Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
• May assist or perform activities and minor maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, or other similar activities.
• Ensures outdoor plants and playground areas are maintained
• Serves as school’s “handy person”

• Does emergency cleaning as needed (e.g. blood, vomit and burst water pipes)
• Perform maintenance and minor repairs (replacing broken switches, fixing door handles, minor leaks etc.)
• Report major damages and oversee repairs
• Undertake occasional custodial and janitorial tasks (lifting heavy items, moving chairs etc.)
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The work also requires the following physical abilities in order to perform the essential job functions: balancing, climbing, crouching, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity and walking.

Requirements

First and foremost, the Custodian must share Sankofa Montessori’s commitment to working together to provide a culturally responsive, child and family-centered Montessori education to ensure that all of our students develop the knowledge, skills, and agency to have a life of purpose. Additionally, for this position, we’re looking for candidates that possess a combination of the following skills:

• Proven experience as custodian, janitor or in a similar role
• Proficiency with written communication
• Knowledge of use and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment and appliances
• Knowledge of safe disposal of chemical liquids and other hazardous components
• Familiarity with basic landscaping and handyman practices
• Attention to detail
• A "make it happen" attitude at all times, especially when faced with adversity
• You have the ability to multi-task, perform well under pressure, and complete tasks/projects effectively and on-time
• Strong learning orientation and desire to work in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
• Unwavering commitment to Sankofa Montessori’s mission and willingness to go above and beyond to meet the needs of Sankofa Montessori students, families, and staff
• Can complete physical demands of the role (including standing and walking for extended periods and lifting heavy objects up to 40 Ibs)
• Successful background check results required
